1944 – What’s in a Name?
TAMKO was founded on September 5, 1944. TAMKO was not the company’s original name, but E.L. and Mary Ethel Craig, its founders, changed the name to reflect their intended territory states: Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma. E.L. was a successful businessman even before he founded TAMKO. He started working when he was only 12 years old. At 69, he decided to enter the roofing business, his final business venture. TAMKO is now under the tutelage of the third generation of the Craig family, still privately owned.
An old streetcar barn in southwest Mississippi served as the first headquarters of the storied company. Today, TAMKO has 20 facilities across the United States, distributing a large selection of building products around the country. You probably used TAMKO products during your last roof repair project.
