Finding the Right Window Size for Your Home

Picking the right window size allows for better lighting and ventilation. It also helps you protect your home from the weather and other outdoor elements. Generally, professionals take several measurements to determine the correct window size for your space. But apart from that, they also consider other things to help you select windows.

Here are the factors you should look into when choosing a window size that will suit your property.

Building Codes

Your new windows should meet local building codes. This is to ensure quality and safety on the property.  If you are not sure about the rules in your area, you can ask your contractor or head to your local building department.

Architectural Style

The overall design of your home plays a big role in selecting the right window. Mismatching could impact the curb appeal and decrease your property value. For example, oversized windows usually work well in modern homes and not in traditional-style houses.

Sill Height

The sill height measures the distance between the ground and the base of the window. If you are installing an egress window in a bedroom, the sill height should not be more than 44 inches based on the building codes. But for other window types, the measurement still varies depending on the location and functionality.

Head Height

Taller windows are a great choice to maximize natural lighting. However, if the head height is too close to the ceiling, installing a curtain rod will be a problem. Another consideration for this window size is how you will be able to reach the top of your windows for maintenance or repair.

Width-to-Height Proportion

This mostly depends on how heavy the window is as well as its type and functionality. For example, picture windows come in almost any shape and size because they are fixed. On the other hand, sliding windows are commonly wider windows and double-hung windows are often taller.
